The legend of the Black Rock of La Fosca
Legend has it that long ago, Princess Pyrene, daughter of the Pyrenees, arrived on this coast fleeing a terrible fate. After a long journey through wild lands and unknown shores, she found in this place a peaceful refuge, far from the dangers that had followed her. The natural beauty of the area, the proximity to the sea, and the sense of calm convinced her to stay.
Pyrene ordered the construction of a magnificent palace by the sea, exactly where the Black Rock stands today. The palace was surrounded by gardens, fountains, and terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. It became a place full of life, beauty, and hope. There, the princess lived while waiting to reunite with her beloved, dreaming of a future far from the threats that had chased her.
Not far from there, on a hill overlooking the coast, stood the castle of Sant Esteve. A lord lived there who, upon learning of Pyrene’s presence, became captivated by her beauty. He soon tried to approach her, hoping to win her heart. But the princess did not return his feelings. Her heart belonged to another, and she rejected every attempt he made.
The rejection was not taken well. The lord of the castle, wounded in his pride and consumed by frustration, turned his love into hatred. Unable to accept Pyrene’s refusal, he decided to take revenge in the only way he knew.
One night, taking advantage of the darkness and silence, he ordered the palace to be set on fire. While everyone was asleep, the flames spread quickly through the rooms, consuming everything in their path. The fire lit up the sky, and its reflection stretched across the sea. Within hours, the place that had once been a paradise was completely destroyed.
The palace disappeared forever.
Over time, the sea and the wind erased the remains of that tragedy. The stones of the building crumbled, the gardens vanished, and the sand covered every trace of what once stood there. But not everything was lost.
A large rock, blackened by the fire, resisted the passage of time. Marked by the flames, it remained as the only visible trace of the ancient palace. Its dark color became a reminder of what had happened, and over the years, it gave its name to the place.
This is how the Black Rock came to be, and with it, the name of La Fosca beach.
Today, this place is one of the most peaceful and beautiful spots in Palamós. Families, travelers, and lovers of the Costa Brava enjoy its scenery without knowing that beneath its calm surface lies a story of love and destruction that has survived for centuries.
When you walk along the beach and see the rock, remember that, according to the legend, it is not just a rock. It is the last remaining piece of a palace consumed by fire, and the memory of a story that has never been forgotten.
